Facts About Sydney You May Not Know...

Hello world!

To kick off our exploration of Sydney, I thought what better way to get us started than some fun facts about Sydney? I've put together a few of what I consider to be the most interesting - Let us know in the comments which ones surprised you most!

1. We are the #5 most expensive city in the world!

Yes, you read that correctly - Australia is known as the most urbanised country in the world, but Sydney ranks in the top 5 of expensive cities, falling behind only Singapore, Paris, Oslo and Zurich.

2. We've only ever had 1 military coup - and it was over rum!

Aussies may be known to love our beer, but in the 18th century, it was all about rum. It was popularly used as a form of payment back when our city was just a colony. However, in 1808, Governor William Bligh banished the practice, and the ringleaders of the rum trade, didn't agree and deposed Bligh in a military coup now known as the Rum Rebellion. How cool!

3. George Street in the heart of our city, is the oldest road in the whole country!

The centre of the Sydney CBD does in fact lay home to the roughly 3km oldest road in Australia.

4. Our infamous Sydney Harbour is the deepest natural harbour in the world!

And it holds 562,000 mega litres of water at high tide.

5. More than 30% of Sydney’s inhabitants were born overseas!

And we couldn't be prouder of our multicultural society!

6. We were featured in the Guinesss Book of World Records... For pizza!

The record for producing the longest line of pizzas holds home in the Italian quarter of Leichardt - a whopping 221 metres of pizzas was created!

7. Over 229 films have been set in or featured Sydney!

Parramatta played host to Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson's "You, Me and Dupree", and Sydney Harbour was the set for "Finding Nemo".

8. Sydney Ferries carry over 14 million passengers each year!

And have been operating since 1875!
